Hayashi Trout Farm structural integrity and seismic resilience

Cleaner, Low-Maintenance Aquaculture Tanks

Hayashi Trout Farm began collaborating with Octaform in 2006, initially focusing on the need for a cleaner, more hygienic solution for their aquaculture tanks. Japan’s humid climate accelerated biofilm buildup on traditional concrete and fiberglass tanks, prompting Hayashi to adopt Octaform’s integrated PVC liner system for improved cleanliness and maintenance.

Following the devastating 2011 earthquake, seismic resilience became a critical factor in future tank construction decisions. Octaform’s formwork and liner system, proven through rigorous seismic testing at the University of British Columbia (UBC), demonstrated unmatched performance in protecting reinforced concrete structures against spalling and leakage during severe earthquakes. This feature provided Hayashi with enhanced structural security and peace of mind as they expanded operations across Japan.

Outcomes

Over the years, Hayashi has implemented various tank configurations using Octaform, including round tanks, straight channels, D-ended raceways and octagonal tanks. This adaptability has enabled Hayashi to tailor their infrastructure to meet specific operational needs while maintaining durability and performance.

In 2024, Hayashi completed their latest project, a two-cell octagonal tank configuration serving as a pilot for a salmon farm in the south of Japan. This innovative design reflects their continued commitment to advancing aquaculture practices with durable and efficient infrastructure.
